Well, I am on day 10 of giving up alcohol for Lent. Now… I can live without beer easy enough, until summer. Sometimes I just quaff a beer or two (or three if I’m outside) because I’m bored, working on a project and hate soda. But wait….no alcohol also means no wine!! Even no RED WINE.
First of all I’m struggling with the fairness of this. (Catholic guilt?) Why do we give up something we like for Lent? I love to run, I don’t give up running. I like coffee, I could give up coffee…no, they would have to separate me from society if I gave up coffee. So why alcohol? Tradition I guess. Years and years of tradition.
I don’t remember when I started this tradition, probably after a wild Mardi Gras party from my younger days. Yet it has taken on a new meaning now that I no longer drink to have a buzz or look cool or whatever the stupid reasons were, but I drink wine because I love the experience, the taste. No MD 20 20 in the house, just some good cheap but tasty California reds. Anyway I’m stuck. I’m too stubborn to quit this tradition. (or again trapped in Catholic guilt, take your pick) So, I’ll keep running, guzzling coffee and replace a great tasting cabernet with a bottle of V8.
By the way, I’ll keep posting even if I’m not drinking. I cleverly (sic) saved a few entries for just such an emergency.
Cheers from the Wine Oaf!
