About Good Cheap Wine Guide

The Wine Oaf

Hello from the Wine Oaf!

What a great time to enjoy researching and sharing wine! Regional wineries seem to be springing up in every area. There are new wine labels to experiment with on almost every trip to Trader Joe’s, the World Market, your local grocery and even Sam’s Club. Let’s face it, wine is hot!

If you are like me, you enjoy opening up a new bottle of wine with dinner, with friends or just kicking back with a book. The problem is, if you are like me, you’re either a working stiff or…you’re just a  little cheap. It’s hard for me to kick back knowing I just spent $50 or more on a bottle of wine! Sorry, $50 is still a lot of money to me!  And…I like to get a deal! (But don’t get me started on that.. )Then the problem is, when you are only spending around $8 a bottle or buying $10 wines, well, sometimes you wind up with really bad grape juice.

So what’s a guy to do? Quit drinking wine! Get another job! (I did not ask my wife’s opinion of this last alternative.) Turning two passions into a hobby seemed like a resonable alternative.  And since Al Gore was kind enough to invent the internet, why not get some help?

There you have it. In a wink of the eye and after a glass of a $9.00 Pinot, I decided to blog away on the  The benefits were immediately obvious.

  1. I have an excuse to drink more wine. Is wine a tax deduction now?
  2. I can get the satisfaction of chasing good wine deals.
  3. I can learn from my bretheren.
  4. And I get to sharpen my blogging skill. (OK – OK. I get to LEARN how to blog! I got it.)

Anyone interested in sharing my experiences or contributing their own is welcome. Please though. Let’s keep this a friendly dialoge between the civilzed.

What’s to follow? I have created, after a second glass of $9 Pinot, a pretty unique ranking system that I will launch as soon as I download a good table plugin. Know any? And, I have already amassed about 40 wines to test and report on over the next few months. (This is gonna be fun.) Goodbye for today.

This blog is dedicated to the Quest for great $10 wines. If you like good wine, if you like getting a deal and if you like to share…welcome my friend. Also any ideas for great plug ins that would help the Quest, please chime in!

In the meantime, let’s do some wine quests!

Also, got some great wine sites..let’s share!

My pleasure. I really enjoy your blog and the way you bring the people behind the wine into the story. Cheers.

I am in the process of putting together a wine info book for my cousin who is getting married this weekend and has a little wine knowledge but would love more. I am describing 15 wine groups, basic flavors, recipes to pair with and adding 6 wines to actually drink with recipes, (as well as some hard to find spices and condiments). I too am an inexpensive wine drinker but expensive wine (brunello de montalpuciano for example) lover. I stumbled on your blog while checking a Trader Joe suggested wine and am hooked on your fun interpretations. Although I would buy wine bottles that were blue and orange – even with bears on them – ha, I still enjoy all your comments. Thanks for the info.
